The Chalfonte, Cape May’s National Historic Landmark Hotel, was built in 1876, ornate gingerbread verandas lined with rocking chairs. The Chalfonte is located centrally in Cape May within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and situated three blocks from the Cape May beaches and promenade. Her wrap-around verandas, Italianate cupola and size give the Chalfonte a distinctive profile.
Adopted by the University of Maryland's School of Architecture in 1979, on a dare from the owners to the head of the school, the Hotel serves as an ongoing educational program for graduate students, the only one of its kind in the country.
