Major John Pawling built a home in 1761 which was destroyed by fire in 1899. The present building was constructed on the stone foundation of that home for Mary Hastings as a wedding present from her husband. (The cornerstone reads "J.P. 1760 M.E.H. 1900.) The visually satisfying Neo-classical style was inspired by the Colombian Exposition of 1893, and became the preferred taste in the first decade of the new century.
